Group of women from Galapagos association shows their sea products from their small industrySMOKED FISHED PRODUCED BY WOMEN ASSOCIATION “PESCADO AZUL”
The Women Association “Pescado Azul” from Isabela Island, Galapagos, is one of the five communities that obtained the Equator Prize, awarded by the United Nations Program (UNDP) worldwide, in recognition to communities that work
to reduce poverty through the conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources
The Association is made up only by spouses of fishermen and it began in September 2001 to process and to commercialize sea products, offering sustainable economic alternatives to fishermen.
During the last five years, the association received support from several international donors and has faced and overcame many challenges.  This prize is in recognition to all their efforts.
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) had the opportunity to provide technical assistance, training and equipment to improve this micro-enterprise, with an investment of $60,000 approximately.
